Hammond-Henry Hospital

OB Identification Program

Infant security is important to us at Hammond-Henry Hospital. We have many special policies in effect to insure that you and your infant are safe and secure while you are here. But that concern doesn't stop when you leave.

Hammond-Henry Hospital, the Hammond-Henry Hospital Auxiliary and the Illinois State Police Clearinghouse for Missing and Exploited Children have teamed up to offer parents the option of having a free record of your child's deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). DNA is a genietic "blueprint" that makes every person unique. In the same way fingerprints differ, each person's DNA is different (the only exception to this is identical twins). DNA analysis is helpful to law enforcement personnel when identifying individuals.

How is the sample obtained?

A small amount of blood that your doctor collects from the umbilical cord at the delivery will be placed on a special filter paper. This paper is placed in a foil pouch and given to you for safe keeping. There is no pain involved for the infant.

How do I store the sample?

The sample should be placed in safe place at room temperature. Once the foil pouch is sealed, it should not be opened unless DNA testing needs to be done. Air and light can alter the sample.

How long does the sample last?

An individuals DNA will not change over the course of his or her life. If the pouch remains closed, the sample should last a lifetime.
