Hammond-Henry Hospital Welcomes New Surgeon

Hammond-Henry Hospital and Dr. Calvin Atwell, M.D. are delighted to announce the addition of Dr. Matthew Heberer, General Surgeon, to the surgical team. 

Dr. Heberer attended University of Illinois – Champaign for his undergraduate degree and then Medical School at the University of Illinois – Peoria. Heberer and his wife Karyssa relocated back to the area after finishing his general surgery residency at the University of North Dakota-Fargo. The couple has four children and spending time with his family is one of his favorite things to do, along with his interest in cowboy boots, firearms, and history.

Dr. Calvin Atwell and Dr. Heberer will co-manage the heavy load of surgical needs in the area.  The Hammond-Henry Hospital surgical center provides expertise in general surgery, colonoscopy/endoscopy, robotic and laparoscopic surgery, treatment of breast disease and breast cancer, and removal and treatment of skin cancers, moles, and warts. Atwell, MD and Heberer, MD also specialize in gallbladder disease, hernia repairs, colorectal surgery, thyroid disease, and vasectomies.

“To have two top-notch surgeons serve residents in our rural communities, with links to our regional communities, is a great benefit for our hospital and everyone we serve.” states Mark Kuhn, Chief Executive Officer.  Dr. Atwell, who has been performing surgeries at Hammond-Henry since 2003 is an Annawan native. Dr. Heberer grew up in Kewanee and is looking forward to serving area residents, and referring primary care providers, with their surgical needs.
