Why Choose Physical Therapy for Pain-Free Living

Why should someone consider physical therapy for treatment compared to another form of treatment?
We believe physical therapy is a collaborative effort in the medical field. Some patients benefit from the biomechanical knowledge of therapists who can progress and regress activities based on each individual need. Physical therapists often spend more one-on-one time with a patient than other medical providers. Similarly, patients seeking therapy may also benefit from the skills and talents of physicians, advanced practitioners, chiropractors, athletic trainers, and strength and conditioning coaches. Ultimately, the patient and their providers work together to determine which treatment or treatments will benefit each individual the most.
Our ultimate goal is to return our patients to their prior level of function independently. In the long run, this saves the patient money because once they have reached their goal, they can continue to work independently, utilizing the strategies and techniques their therapist taught them.
Working Towards Living an Active Life
When working with a physical therapist, treatment plans are patient-specific, but daily mobility exercises are oftentimes recommended. A Hammond-Henry physical therapist will design exercises and activities directly related to a patient’s desired outcomes. We strive to provide a lighthearted atmosphere in what can often be a challenging time for patients.
An Inside Look into Knee-Specific Therapy
The most common knee injuries treated include:
- ACL
- Meniscus
- Arthritis
- Knee replacements
- Patellofemoral pain
- Tendonitis
- Post-operative total knee arthroplasty
During a physical therapy session, we start by asking the patient simple questions about what is going well and what is not. Next, we incorporate exercises to promote mobility and help the patient stretch in all three planes of motion with 2, 3, or 4 points of contact, depending on the goal and level of stability required for safety and effectiveness. We incorporate strengthening exercises where needed and focus on tasks that parallel real life. If needed, we utilize manual therapy for soft tissue mobilization, Kinesio taping, and sometimes ice with compression.
An Inside Look into Shoulder-Specific Therapy
Most commonly, patients see us for post-surgical rotator cuff repair and for general shoulder pain. During a physical therapy session, we start with some form of movement to increase blood flow and decrease tissue tension. Next, we work to improve shoulder mobility through various stretches or manual techniques. Finally, we follow-up with strengthening activities to improve stability and performance in the patient’s newly available range of motion.
