The Hammond-Henry Hospital Foundation is planning a courtyard garden area that will be located across from the new east entrance, outside of the new dining room. This project began last December as part of the year-end plan to develop the concrete sidewalks and patio areas. The Foundation had a great response and support from the community for the garden. Plans are to continue to develop this space with future gifts in order to provide a peaceful, healing environment for patients, residents, family members and staff. Among the garden’s most valued elements will be features that represent life and health, such as trees, plants and flowers. Additionally, elements that arouse the senses, such as fragrances, the sounds of birds and water, and the feel of sunlight or a gentle breeze, will be important to the healing environment.
A planning committee including Cheryl Culbertson, Darcy Hepner, Dr. Randy Mullin, Lona Pribble, Barb Schang, and Sharon Van Kerrebroeck modified and accepted a garden plan and now plans are moving forward for the completion of the garden.
The garden plan includes several types of grasses, hostas, perennial flowers, shrubs, and trees. It will include a patio area for patients, residents, family members and staff. This patio will be wheelchair accessible from three doors that will enter and exit into the courtyard. There will be low-voltage LED light fixtures around the walkways for safety. A highlight will include a pondless waterfall with the soothing sound of water flowing through the garden. Also stone seat-walls will be featured in two areas of the garden by the patio.
This project will begin in early June and be completed for use this summer when construction of the dining area is complete. The Foundation hopes to raise $6,214 to complete the courtyard garden project.
