The purpose of the junior volunteer program at Hammond-Henry Hospital is to allow students to observe the many types of employment available in a hospital and to allow them to gain experience in a work setting. Junior volunteers provide extra help for patients and staff and the residents enjoy their company.

Requirements
  • Junior volunteers may be young men and women entering the eighth grade or older as of the school year of 2008-09. Volunteers must be interested in working with people and being in a hospital setting. Must be able to volunteer at least 24 hours during the summer.
Training
  • Before beginning volunteer work, all students are required to go through an oritentation that covers: infection control, attitude, behavior in a hospital, fire safety, and wheelchair usage. Youth must also be mature enough to sign and follow requirements of Hammond-Henry Hospital's confidentiality agreement. Junior volunteers must attend one orientation/training session on Wednesday, June 11 (1-4pm), Thursday, June 12 (9am-12noon) or Monday, June 23 (1-4pm) (tentative).
Uniforms and Nametags
  • The hospital is a professional workplace and Junior volunteers are required to follow the hospital dress code. Students are asked to purchase a polo shirt ($10 paid by the students - the remainder paid by HHH.) Usually teens wear slacks (khakis) or capris. (Girls may also wear skirts.) No jeans or shorts are allowed. Flip-flops are not allowed. Sandals may be worn but must be worn with socks. (Wearing socks or hose in patient care areas is a Health Department policy.) Nametags are provided by the hospital. Nametags must be worn whenever volunteering in the hospital.
Schedules
  • Summer hours are from 9:00am to 12:00pm and from 12:00pm to 3:00pm. or 3:00pm to 6:00pm. Generally teen volunteers work once or twice a week. The Junior Volunteer program will begin the week of June 16 and continue through August 15 (9 weeks). Junior volunteers need to be aware that volunteering is a serious commitment and they are expected to be here when they are scheduled.
Duties
  • A junior volunteer’s main duty is to assist in departments with tasks such as: delivering water, juice and mail. Other assistance is requested by departments, such as help with preparing mailings or patient materials, filing, information desk and etc. Junior volunteers who are in the 10th grade or older may be trained as couriers and making interoffice deliveries.
